Music

2nd Grade MUSIC

 

Objective:

Second grade music aligns with the PA Arts and Humanities Standards and the National Music Standards.   The objective of the Music Class is to provide the students with the knowledge and skills related to the elements of music, individual and group performances, understanding the connection of music to history and culture, and understanding of how music connects to other disciplines.  The overarching goal is to help the student to develop a love of music and acquire skills that can be carried over into other areas of their lives.

 

During the School Year Students Will Learn: 

Creating

  • Improvise rhythmic and melodic ideas through use of their voices, classroom instruments, and virtual instruments.
  • Use iconic or standard notation to record musical ideas.
  • Revise and present their musical ideas with teacher, and peer feedback.

Performing

  • Express personal interest and preference for musical selections. 
  • Use of music concepts such as tonality, meter, iconic and standard notation, and expressive qualities such as dynamics and tempo.
  • Practice and present music through their voice, classroom instruments, and ukuleles.

Responding

  • Describe how music is often created for a purpose that reflects personal interests, and experiences.
  • Describe how musical concepts are used to express a performer’s expressive intent.

Connecting

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between music, and other disciplines and arts.
  • Understand how music is a part of daily life.

 

What Students Will Do Throughout the School Year

Students will participate in a variety of musical experiences throughout the year.   All students will to the best of their ability be able to:

  • Move to a steady beat in 2/4 and 4/4 rhythm and distinguish between beat and rhythm.
  • Sing alone and with others a variety of musical repertoire.  (Unison, Rounds, AB, ABA, AABA form)
  • Develop an understanding of Kodaly notation singing melodic patterns including (so-mi / so-mi-la / do-re-mi-so-la)
  • Create music within set criteria through technology (Chrome Music Lab, Music Play Interactives)
  • Written music notation is incorporated throughout the year as the students explore a variety of songs.
  • Play a variety of instruments including various classroom percussion instruments, boomwhackers, and an introduction to World Drumming music.
  • Identifying instruments of the orchestra.   Yearly field trips to Heinz Hall for the School Time Concerts.
  • Ukulele (Play basic strumming patterns and the chords of C, C7, Am)
  • Movement activities to show various styles, musical forms, and body percussion.

 

3rd Grade MUSIC

Third grade music aligns with the PA Arts and Humanities Standards and the National Music Standards.   The objective of the Music Class is to provide the students with the knowledge and skills related to the elements of music, individual and group performances, understanding the connection of music to history and culture, and understanding of how music connects to other disciplines.  The overarching goal is to help the student to develop a love of music and acquire skills that can be carried over into other areas of their lives.

 

During the School Year Students Will Learn: 

Creating

  • Improvise rhythmic and melodic ideas through use of their voices, classroom instruments, and virtual instruments.
  • Generate musical ideas (rhythms and melodies within a given tonality or meter.
  • Use iconic or standard notation to document and record melodic musical ideas.
  • Revise and present personal musical ideas with teacher feedback.

Performing

  • Analyze music to read and perform rhythmic patterns and melodic phrases using iconic and standard notation.
  • Demonstrate expressive qualities such as dynamics and tempo.
  • Rehearse and refine technical accuracy, expressive qualities, and identify performance challenges.
  • Perform music through voice and a variety of instruments with expression and technical accuracy.

Responding

  • Describe how selected music connects to special interests, experiences, or purposes.
  • Demonstrate and describe how structure, and the elements of music are used in compositions.
  • Demonstrate and describe how expressive qualities such as dynamics and tempo are used in performers interpretation of a song.
  • Evaluate musical works and performances using established criteria.

  • Develop an understanding of Kodaly notation singing melodic patterns including (so-mi / so-mi-la / do-re-mi-so-la / high do / low la and so)
  • Create music within set criteria through technology (Chrome Music Lab, Music Play Interactives)
  • Written music notation is incorporated throughout the year as the students explore a variety of songs.
  • Yearly field trips to Heinz Hall for the School Time Concerts.  (Theme varies from year to year)
  • World Music Drumming (Ensemble 1, Improvisations, Take Time In Life)
  • Intro to African Dance movements.
  • Ukulele (Play basic strumming patterns and the chords of C, C7, Am, F, and intro to G)
  • Recorder (Play various melodies with notes B,A,G,E, and D 
  • Movement activities to show various styles, musical forms, and body percussion.

 

4th Grade MUSIC

 

Objective:

Fourth grade music aligns with the PA Arts and Humanities Standards and the National Music Standards.   The objective of the Music Class is to provide the students with the knowledge and skills related to the elements of music, individual and group performances, understanding the connection of music to history and culture, and understanding of how music connects to other disciplines.  The overarching goal is to help the student to develop a love of music and acquire skills that can be carried over into other areas of their lives.

 

During the School Year the Students Will Learn: 

Creating

  • Improvise rhythmic and melodic ideas through use of their voices, classroom instruments, and virtual instruments.
  • Generate musical ideas (such as rhythms, melodies and simple accompaniment patterns within major or minor tonalities and meters.
  • Use iconic or standard notation to document and record rhythmic, melodic, and simple harmonic musical ideas.
  • Revise and present the final version of personal created music to others.

Performing

  • Analyze music to read and perform rhythmic patterns and melodic phrases using iconic and standard notation.
  • Demonstrate how intent is conveyed through expressive qualities such as dynamics and tempo.
  • Rehearse to refine technical accuracy, expressive qualities, and performance challenges.

  • Sing alone and with others a variety of musical repertoire.  Unison, step, skip, leap.   Major and minor tonality.  Various forms including theme and variations.
  • Develop an understanding of Kodaly notation singing.  5-line staff and letter names in treble clef.
  • Create music within set criteria through technology (Chrome Music Lab, Music Play Interactives, Garage Band)
  • Written music notation is incorporated throughout the year as the students explore a variety of songs.
  • Yearly field trips to Heinz Hall for the School Time Concerts.  (Theme varies from year to year)
  • Expressive elements of dynamics, articulations, accents, staccato, legato.
  • World Music Drumming w/African Dance movements. (Ensemble 2 and 3, Traditional African Rhythms, Funga Alafia, Kuku)
  • Ukulele (Play basic strumming patterns and the chords of C, C7, Am, F, G, D)
  • Movement activities to show various styles, musical forms, and body percussion.

 

5th Grade MUSIC

 

Objective:

Fifth grade music aligns with the PA Arts and Humanities Standards and the National Music Standards.   The objective of the Music Class is to provide the students with the knowledge and skills related to the elements of music, individual and group performances, understanding the connection of music to history and culture, and understanding of how music connects to other disciplines.  The overarching goal is to help the student to develop a love of music and acquire skills that can be carried over into other areas of their lives.

 

During the School Year the Students Will Learn: 

Creating

  • Improvise rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic ideas through the use of their voices, classroom instruments, and virtual instruments within specific tonalities, meters, and chord changes.
  • Use iconic or standard notation and/or recording technology to document rhythmic, melodic and two chord harmonic musical ideas.
  • Present the final version of personal created music to others that demonstrates craftsmanship.

Performing

  • Demonstrate understanding of the structure and the elements of music (such as rhythm, pitch, form, and harmony in music selected for performance.
  • Demonstrate intent conveyed through interpretive decisions and expressive qualities (such as dynamics, tempo, timbre, and articulation/style)
  • Perform music alone or with others with expression, technical accuracy, and appropriate interpretation.   (Voice, classroom instruments, virtual instruments, and ukuleles).

Responding

  • Demonstrate and explain how the expressive qualities (such as dynamics, tempo, timbre, and articulation) are used in performers and personal interpretations to reflect expressive intent.
  • Evaluate musical works and performances, applying established criteria citing evidence of the elements of music.

Connecting

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between music, and other disciplines and arts.
  • Demonstrate understanding of relationships between music and the other arts, other disciplines, varied contexts, and daily life.

  • World Music Drumming w/African Dance Movements (Traditional African Rhythms including Jingo Ba, Yankadi-Macrou)
  • Ukulele (Play basic strumming patterns and the chords of C, C7, Am, F, G, D)
  • Movement activities to show various styles, musical forms, and body percussion.

 

6th Grade MUSIC

 

Objective:

Sixth grade music aligns with the PA Arts and Humanities Standards and the National Music Standards.   The objective of the Music Class is to provide the students with the knowledge and skills related to the elements of music, individual and group performances, understanding the connection of music to history and culture, and understanding of how music connects to other disciplines.  The overarching goal is to help the student to develop a love of music and acquire skills that can be carried over into other areas of their lives.

 

During the School Year the Students Will Learn:

  • Improvise rhythmic and melodic ideas through use of their voices, classroom instruments, and virtual instruments.
  • Use iconic or standard notation to record musical ideas.

    Various forms including theme and variations, first and second endings.  
  • Develop an understanding of Kodaly notation singing.  5-line staff and letter names in treble clef.  Major scales of C,F,G,  key signatures, and accidentals.
  • Create music within set criteria through technology (Chrome Music Lab, Music Play Interactives, Garage Band)
  • Yearly field trips to Heinz Hall for the School Time Concerts.  (Theme varies from year to year)
  • Expressive elements of dynamics, articulations, accents, staccato, legato.
  • World Music Drumming w/African Dance Movements (Full Drumming ensemble w/Djembe, Dun Duns, Bells, Shakere.  Including techniques of bass/tone/slap, improvised solos, and traditional arrangements. from Mamady Keito)
  • Ukulele: Syncopated strumming patterns and the chords of C, C7, Am, F, G, G7. D, Em) 
  • Movement activities to show various styles, musical forms, and body percussion.
