Band

Objective:

Grade 4 aligns with the National Standards for Music Ensembles (Novice) and the PA Arts and Humanities Standards. The band program will provide instruction in Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, and Percussion. This course will provide instruction in music performance, theory, and history as well as exposure to a wide variety of musical styles and genres. The goal of this course is to provide a positive experience for all students as they develop their musicianship.

During the School Year the Students Will Learn:

Creating:

• To compose and improvise melodic and rhythmic ideas or motives that reflect characteristics of music studied in rehearsal.

Performing:

• Play varied repertoire based on interest, music reading skills, an understanding of the structure of the music, context, and the technical skill of the individual or ensemble.
• Identify expressive qualities in a varied repertoire of music that can be demonstrated through prepared performances.
• Use self-reflection and peer feedback to refine individual and ensemble performances of a varied repertoire of music.

Responding:

• Identify how knowledge of context and the use of repetition, similarities, and contrasts inform the response to music.

Connecting:

• Demonstrate how interests, knowledge, and skills relate to personal choices and intent when creating, performing, and responding to music.

What Students Will Do Throughout the School Year:

• Learn how to properly care and maintain their instrument.
• Play independently (solo) and as a part of a large ensemble.
• Learn how to read music notation.
• Begin to learn and use essential terms and vocabulary necessary for playing and reading music.
• Play a 5-note scale.
• Play music that is considered standard for the ensemble, as well as music that is chosen by the students.

The goal of this course is to provide a positive experience for all students as they develop their musicianship.
